Recipe: Vegetable Pulav

Ingredients (serves 4) :

  • 3-4 carrots, diced.
  • Beans, cut.
  • Any other vegetables as required e.g. peas, cauliflower, onions.
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon.
  • Cloves – 4 to 5.
  • Cinnamon – 2 to 3 sticks.
  • Cardamom – 4 to 5 pods.
  • Cashewnuts – about 4 teaspoons.
  • Raisins – about 4 teaspoons.
  • Garlic – 4 to 5 cloves, cut.
  • Basmati rice – 2 cups.

Method:

  • Fry the basmati rice in about 3 teaspoons ghee and keep aside.
  • In ghee or vegetable oil, fry the cumin seeds. To this add the garlic and cashewnuts and fry till golden brown. To this mixture, add the carrots and beans (and any other vegetables) and fry for a few minutes. Add a pinch of turmeric and salt to taste and mix well.
  • Combine the basmati rice fried in ghee with the fried vegetables in a separate container and add 4 cups of water.
  • Pressure cook the mixture. Once the pulav is done, add raisins.
  • Serve hot.

Ganesh Darshan Fast Food

One of the best fast food places for South Indian food is Ganesh Darshan in Jayanagar, Bangalore. Formerly a traditional restaurant, it is now a fast food place with self-service serving Masala Dosas, Plain Dosas, Onion Dosas, Rava Idlis, Vadas and Bonda Soup among other items.

We had a masala dosa and a bonda soup. The masala dosa was spongy, yet crispy, melting softly in the mouth- to die for! The bonda soup was fairly tasty as well.

Wandering through Jayanagar 4th Block

While wandering through Jayanagar 4th Block in Bangalore, we came across various vendors selling these four fruits – Jamun, Panneer, Figs and Plums.

The Jamun (Syzygium cumini). also called Jambul and நாக பழம் (Naga Pazham) in Tamil is a sweet but tart fruit that has a unique taste. It also has a slight astringent effect on the throat. It is one of my favorites.

The Panneer Fruit (Syzygium jambos) also called Rose Apple in English has a smell reminiscent of rosewater.

Also being sold was jackfruit. Jackfruit is another of my favorites with its intoxicating smell and sweet, rich flavor.

Sumukha Juice & Chats

An excellent place for kulfis, it also has great sugarcane juice. The kulfis come in several flavors such as Mango Malai, Fruit Kulfi, Kesar Khajoor, Kesar Pista, Pista Badam, Kesar Badam, Meva Kesar and Elaichi Special. They are very yummy and taste much better than those by Kwality Walls. It’s definitely two thumbs up to the flavors that we tried – Pista Badam, Elaichi Special and Meva Kesar.

काkori Indian Restaurant

We visited काkori (Kakori) restaurant in J.P. Nagar, Bangalore, India. In an excellent ambience amidst walls adorned with miniature paintings, you have a wide choice of curries, rotis, naans and even beer and cocktails. The curries include vegetarian items such as bhindi do pyaz and various panneer dishes, non-vegetarian kababs and tangdis as well as seafood items.

The beer selection included Kingfisher, Budweiser and Miller while there was a wide variety of cocktails that used rum, vodka, tequila and whisky, such as the Mojito, the Manhattan and the Long Island Iced Tea.

I had a glass of Kingfisher to start with followed by a katori of some excellent Panneer Lababdar and some tandoori rotis.

We topped it off with some delicious rabdi.

The wallet factor came to about Rs. 800 including tax. All in all, a great dining experience!
